Torbreck The Steading 2010
Do Australian wines interest you? How would you like to taste one that has been nurtured back to life from century old faded vines? Well, you can with Torbreck’s The Steading 2010. Some of the vines used in this creation are over a century old! Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro are blended together creating a story that will delight your senses. And, you will enjoy it’s depth from the first taste, an hour later and into the final glass the next day. This is an amazing find for $39!
I suggest pairing this red blend with this amazing Sunday Ragu. It’s an easy crock pot meal that’s as rich in taste as this wine. This Ragu is a favorite here on Myer Acre. But, beware! As my husband says, “It will be so good you will want to smack your momma!”. Please don’t smack your momma folks. Just enjoy the two of these together. You’re welcome.
Vinification
The Vinification notes from Torbreck’s website reflect the absolute care, skilled process and attention to detail that went into curating this amazing vintage. Pull up a seat and get cozy while you read this!
“Each of the individual blocks (many were picked in different stages to ensure perfectly ripened fruit) were de-stemmed separately into both wooden & concrete open top fermenters where the juice was gently pumped over the skins twice a day for 6-7 days. After basket pressing the wine was gravity fed into underground cement vats where it naturally settled and was later racked into older French Hogsheads. Following 24 months maturation the wine was assembled and bottled in August 2012 without the use of fining or filtration.”
Does it get any dreamier than this?
My Notes
Open the bottle and you will notice the aroma and flavor. They are very strong like a rose bud just about to pop! Then, pour the rest of the bottle into a decanter and let it breathe for about an hour. Your next small glassful will have opened up. And, you will have a flavor that is much deeper and richer.
This Torbreck Steading amazingly evolves and changes, revealing it’s true personality! I was interested to see how well this wine would hold up and develop into the next day. So, I put the stopper into the decanter and I pretended I didn’t hear it calling me from downstairs. Because of my patience the reward, my friends, was one of the best blends I have had hands down!
Winemakers Notes
“The 2011 Torbreck Steading is composed from the traditional Barossa cultivars of Grenache, Shiraz & Mataro. It has long been a favorite wine within the Torbreck stable because of the old, gnarled ‘bush vines’ that produce its core. Deep ruby with flickers of violet, its delicate aromas of truffle, five spice and spring flowers are supported by a rich core of licorice, saddle leather and Provencal herbs. Very ‘Burgundian’ in style, the palate is elegant and pure with subtle notes of crushed cherries, earth and cedar all neatly wound by a taut spine of acidity and ripe supple tannins. The 2010 Steading will continue to unfold with time in the cellar & shall provide those with the patience great enjoyment for many years to come.” – Torbreck Vitners
