Juan Gil – Jumilla 2016, Silver Label
Oh my goodness y’all. I’d like you to meet my new friend Jumilla! This red will be making another guest appearance tonight at dinner. After getting to know each other a bit the first time around, I decided to hop on the interwebiverse and do some research.
Spanish wines have always eluded me. I’ve heard the words “Jumilla”, “Murcia” and “Monastrell” and wanted to know more.
Jumilla is a DO (Denominacion de Origen) of Murcia. “To earn the use of a DO title, wines must conform to various production conditions, which apply both to vineyard management (e.g. permitted grape varieties, planting densities, and vine yields) and winemaking techniques (e.g. aging regimes).” – wine-searcher.com
It turns out the Monastrell grapes have been grown in this region for centuries. And they certainly create some engaging levels. There is no doubt this red is sassy, full bodied, delightful and spicy. Hey, it’s me in wine form 🙂
At $14 a bottle and 91-92 points, this wine will become part of our regular rotation until there is no more available. So, hurry and get yourself some!
My Notes
I couldn’t stop swirling, admiring and smelling this gem. It coated the inside of my glass nicely and the legs hung out for a while. On the nose I detected dark fruit (blackberries and blueberries) and deliciously smoked wood. Upon the first taste, my palette picked up black cherry, wood and spices including pepper. The finish was good, long and dry. The dark fruits lingered perfectly, though they are not overly sweet.
I found the best way to experience the enticing levels of this Jumilla is to stick your nose in the glass and inhale. Then take a sip while holding your breath, let it sit for a few seconds. Then swallow, and immediately and quickly breathe out your nose. See what I mean? Pure deliciousness…I’m swooning.
We originally had this wine with sausage pepperoni pizza. It paired well enough in my opinion. But tonight we will enjoy it with some homemade ragu (currently in the crock pot) spooned over pappardelle. I’m excited to see how this wine will open up with this dish.
Winemakers Notes
OK, they said it better…
“Deep purple/black color. Explosive aromas of ripe currant, red berries and smoked notes. Rich, powerful and voluminous on the attack, a huge mouthful of crème-de-cassis concentration, silken and juicy in the mid-palate with excellent length and persistence, and a long spicy well-balanced finish including toasted notes provided by the French wood. .” – Juan Gil site
